UK approve of Pfizer / BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine

The Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 has been approved by the UK and can be rolled out to the most at risk areas as soon as next week.

This makes the UK the first in the world to clinically approve a vaccine for COVID-19 for supply as tweeted by Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. It has been specifically approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) who have been given the power to approve the vaccine ahead of Brexit, when they will be fully responsible for the authorisation of medicines.

The vaccine has been tested and analysed extensively by the MHRA and shown to have a 95% efficiency rating which the UK will deliver 40 million doses of to the public. The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) will deliver more information on whom, how, and where the first waves of vaccinations will be, among 800,000 of which will be the most venerable and care staff.
