UK Energy Systems Require Digitalisation

The digitalisation and modernization of UK energy systems is a key component to net-zero and managing the future of our grid.

As we invest more into clean energy sources and technologies to meet net-zero targets we will require a smart and flexible energy system. We will require the digitalisation of the grid. Energy Digitalisation Taskforce (EDiT) is the solution.

EDiT is a Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) launched task force in partnership with the industry regulator Ofgem and Innovate UK agency. This is a dedicated team that will continue the efforts to unlock the full potential of clean energy with a smart energy system capable of communicating with new technology. The task force will be in operation from April 2021 until December 2021.

The future of our energy system will be a complex one. Technology is constantly being developed to advance our progress to a clean future. Electricity demand will increase as we make changes such as using electric vehicles or moving to electric heat pumps in homes. As such these technologies need to be monitored and managed so that they remain efficient and reduce cost on the consumers.

A modern and digitalised energy system is critical to managing these changes, ensuring we unlock the full potential of energy sources and have the capability to expand. EDiT will provide the necessary recommendations and challenges to focus on the industry and reach this goal.

EDiT will ensure effective communication across the industry with developed targets and roadmaps. They will be responsible for identifying gaps in the market that require immediate innovation support and assessing the risks following digitalisation. Where risks are identified, appropriate frameworks will be put forward that reduce negative impacts.

Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Minister of State for Business, Energy and Clean Growth, said:

“We need a smart and flexible energy system to harness energy from low carbon sources such as the sun and wind, to power our homes, businesses and vehicles.”

“We know digitalisation holds the key to our transition to a decarbonised and decentralised energy system, and we look forward to the recommendations from the Taskforce”
